Ellen von Unwerth, born 1954 in Germany, is a director and photographer whose career really took off when she was hired for a Guess campaign, featuring an up-and-coming model, Claudia Schiffer. It was von Unwerth’s photographic style, which focuses on seductive, provocative women in playful scenarios, that skyrocketed her career. Over the years she has done campaigns for Absolut, Agent Provocateur, Dior, L’Oréal, Miu Miu and many more, and her work has been featured regularly in magazines like Cosmopolitan, Elle, Interview, Vanity Fair, Vogue, I-D, The Face and The New York Times. Furthermore, she has directed short films for clients like Azzedine Alaïa, Dior, Guess, and Katherine Hamnett, and a range of commercials and music videos. In 1991, she won first prize at the International Festival of Fashion Photography.
